September arrives with a fresh batch of releases you absolutely cannot miss: romantic comedies, gut-wrenching dramas, breathless thrillers. Plenty to find the perfect film for your evenings, whether you are in the mood for something light, something curious, or ready to be completely shaken up.
1. Highest 2 Lowest, September 5 on Apple TV+
Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, an iconic American cinema duo, team up for the fifth time on this urban thriller, produced by A24, inspired by Akira Kurosawa's classic High and Low, transposed into a brutal, unforgiving contemporary New York.
Denzel Washington plays a music mogul known for having "the best ears in the business," whose life is upended when he becomes the target of a ransom demand. Caught between his power, his morals, and survival, he faces an impossible dilemma.
With Spike Lee behind the camera and A24 producing, Highest 2 Lowest is shaping up to be a tense, elegant crime drama deeply rooted in the social fractures of today's America. One of the season's big event films.
2. We Live in Time, September 5 on myCanal
We Live in Time is finally available on myCanal, and it is the perfect film for a chill Sunday evening on the couch.
A lovely romantic comedy set against a medical drama backdrop, but thankfully, it never quite tips into melodrama, and moves at a fairly brisk pace. It is sweet, sincere, and sometimes even radiant. It is always a joy to watch Florence Pugh or Andrew Garfield, so the two of them together is even better!
3. The Life of Chuck, September 30 on Disney+
No, Stephen King is not just about horror. His stories have often shown a different side of his writing, from Stand by Me to The Green Mile, by way of The Shawshank Redemption. The Life of Chuck, adapted from a novella published in 2020, fits squarely into that more intimate, universal vein.
Directed by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House), the film unfolds Chuck's life (Tom Hiddleston) across three chapters, from his death to his childhood. Between existential drama, musical, and teen movie, the story shifts tone from act to act while keeping its emotional coherence.
Acclaimed at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, where it won the People's Choice Award, The Life of Chuck confirms the great chemistry between Flanagan and King's world. With Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill starring, this is a bold and deeply human adaptation.
4. All of You, September 26 on Apple TV+
After shining in Ted Lasso and Shrinking, Brett Goldstein returns in a role that is the polar opposite of his famous Roy Kent. Alongside Imogen Poots and Jenna Coleman, he stars in All of You, a sci-fi romantic comedy co-written and directed by William Bridges (Black Mirror).
The film follows Simon (Goldstein) and Laura (Poots), inseparable friends since college, whose fate is upended when Laura decides to take a test that reveals your soulmate. Despite years of unspoken feelings, the two go their separate ways, but their lives keep crossing paths, as if something between them remained unfinished. So, is it worth risking everything for love, or should you accept your fate?
Somewhere between romance, existential drama, and a satire of our modern obsession with finding "the one," All of You is shaping up to be a funny, moving piece of work. For Ted Lasso fans, it is also a chance to rediscover Brett Goldstein in a completely different light.
5. Swiped, September 19 on Disney+
Inspired by true events, "Swiped" tells the story of Whitney Wolfe, creator of the dating app Bumble. Discover how she revolutionized the male-dominated world of tech, with boldness and ingenuity.
